Abilities and Powers
What can my character bring with them from home?
When they first arrive in Tanelorn, your character will only have the clothes they were wearing and whatever possessions or equipment they might have had directly on their person at the moment they were brought in. We will be willing to make exceptions to this in the case of some object or possession that is vital to your character's continued survival.
Any familiar or pet must be in physical contact with the player's character when said character came loose in the timestream.
Will my character still have the same powers they did in canon?
Yes! But keep in mind that Tanelorn is a city that takes physics to be one of a series of suggestions rather than unbreakable laws. Therefore the wall that surrounds the city is going nowhere. And unless you've put in the time and effort to get your ring upgraded, you won't be going anywhere either no matter how strong of a wizard you might be. This goes for all manner of psychic, elemental, or other manipulative powers, so no dice on tunneling, or trying to hit Tanelorn with photon torpedoes from orbit.
- Note: We're all for having fun with powers at Tanelorn, but we'd also like to reiterate one of our rules by reminding you that using powers to godmode any characters other than expendable NPCs — that is to say, player characters and named NPCs — will not be tolerated. Additionally, please also keep in mind the rule of ICA = ICC, and be prepared for your character to receive IC consequences if they go about blowing up buildings or murdering swathes of NPCs outside the city walls.
Do the rules of a new world affect my character's abilities?
A character's own canon powers usually follow their own universe's rules. But, keep in mind that traveling outside Tanelorn may have an impact on your character's natural abilities through environmental or temporal shifts. Keep an eye on the announcements on a particular world for any such notes.
Likewise, abilities that require a certain range, or environmental aspect ( telepathy, or water/earth/air/fire bending for example ) may be altered or impacted by the environment of the new world that Tanelorn is currently "docked" with.
If your character has acquired powers from another universe, then these powers will usually follow the rules of whatever universe they are acquired from, but it is more likely that learned abilities will be more susceptible to the influences of the new "docked" worlds.
Does this mean that characters can learn new powers?
Maybe! It depends on the character's natural abilities, and where and how they are learning the new skill.
Finding a teacher is key, but magic items can sometimes be bought ( or looted ) from the worlds that Tanelorn visits. It's a risk, certainly, because there is the possibility that your character is from just too far away ( temporally speaking ) for a new ability or supernatural power to be able to stick.
If your character is learning from another PC, then we do ask that each of their respective canons would at least compliment each other on this? For example; some canons say one can not learn to be a wizard, they are simply born one, or not. Likewise it may be possible to become a werewolf from being bitten, but to be a shapeshifter with perfect control, one must be born with the ability.
So yes, it is possible, but it is advised not to push all powers to their limits. The possibility of destroying one's body ( or even their soul ) as a repercussion of "power-collecting" is not unknown.
What about characters who have magical/supernatural powers in their source canon?
Any powers that they might learn will need to fit with the kind of natural abilities they already have. For example; Inorganics, robots, and cyborgs would be more apt to take tech upgrades, but may have more difficulty with using magic, whereas a a regular human may be able to start learning some kinds of magic, but may not have the same strength of endurance as a cyborg.
We do encourage you to be creative, though. If you can make a good case for how your character acquires a new ability, then we'll probably be just fine with it.
Can I make permanent changes, like being turned into a werewolf, or gaining cybernetic parts?
Permanent changes to your character are your choice, but remember that ICA = ICC. So yes, it is possible for a character to be turned into a werewolf. Similarly, cybernetic implants may also carry over from one world to the next, though special additional weaknesses will also still apply ( moon phases or electrical currents for example )
Do I need mod permission for my character to gain a new power?
Yes, you do. Please fill out a Player Plot Request form and post it to that page, or you may PM the mod journal if you prefer an element of surprise.
Once you've been given permission, add your character's new abilities somewhere on your character journal and to your permissions post. We also ask that you play out the acquisition of that power. You don't have to do extensive logging, but don't entirely handwave it, either.
